Founding partners left to right Gary Bergland, Nancy Henry, Mary Jo Bergland, Tom Henry left retirement to create the Crumble·Ons® brand and S'mores Crunch® product.
Crumble·Ons® new 100% original product began as an "aha" with leftovers from a lakeside campfire. Using the basic ingredients of the first s'mores recipe printed in 1927, Mary Jo Bergland chopped marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers and sprinkled them over pancakes. The "s'mores pancakes" were an instant hit with visiting guests. Having developed more than 2,000 recipes over the years as a food columnist for the Chicago Tribune, the Chicago Sun Times and owning a cooking school, Mary Jo knew immediately the concept was a hit and could be a saleable product. Finding nothing like S'mores Crunch® on the Internet, she shared the concept with husband Gary, a retired business executive and neighbor Tom Henry, retired Director of Research and Development for ConAgra.
The three neighbors retired from retirement to take this "aha" concept to market. The Bergland and Henry home kitchens became Crumble·Ons® Research Kitchens as they began testing various ingredients and formulations. The partners worked on the three original s'mores ingredients of chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers for 1½ years before their first commercial-grade production run by a Chicago-based co-packer.
The first recorded recipe for s'mores appeared in the publication "Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts" in 1927. It took nearly a century for a company to match the same great flavors in an easy-to-use product for, snacks, pancakes, ice cream, and desserts. Meyers Bay Foods Company, LLC of McHenry, Illinois, owner of the Crumble·Ons® brand, is proud to be that company.
